Excerpt from Merchants of Death: The American Tobacco Industry
During my time as surgeon general, I've been given many complex assignments - the Baby Doe issue, organ transplants, care for the aged, and now aids. But one issue was waiting for me when I arrived in this position, and it's been part of my daily agenda for the past seven years. That issue is smoking. During all this time, I've been in the forefront of the campaign to educate all Americans about the dangers of using tobacco.
At first, I had the assignment because it belonged to my office. But now, after being immersed in the data for a number of years, and after closely observing just how the tobacco industry works, I feel a personal responsibility to continue working on this issue.

Approximately 350,000 Americans die each year from lung cancer, heart ailments or emphysema directly attributable to smoking, notes White (Human Debris). The movement for a smoke-free society is not viewed passively by the six firms that produce cigarettes in this country: they vigorously defend themselves in product liability suits (the courts are concerned about the possibility of a flood of such litigation) and they are outspoken in asserting that bans on their advertisements threaten their First Amendment rights. At the same time, however, these firms are aggressively diversifying, particularly into the food industry. They have proved to be formidable fighters, and White urges the continuation of the battle against the tobacco producers for their "socially irresponsible conduct."
