A late eighteenth century edition of Kotzebue's most popular work, Menschenhass und Reue, bound with the biography of German poet Theodor Korner. There is only a half title for Karl Theodor Korner's Biographie, the title page has not been bound in. The publication details are for Menschenhass und Reue.Menschenhass und Reuewas one of the most popular German plays of the century, and is a play in five acts, set amongst nobility. Direct from the Widdrington library at Newton Hall, an 18th century country house and estate in Northumberland, with a pencil shelf mark to the front free-endpaper. With the ink namestamp of Dorothy Widdrington to the front pastedown. Dorothy Widdrington married Edward Grey, Viscount Grey of Fallodon. Karl Theodor Korner, 1791 1813, was a German poet and soldier. He was often called the 'German Tyrtaeus'. August Friedrich Ferdinand von Kotzebue, 1761 1819, was an influentialGerman dramatist. He was murdered in 1819 by Karl Ludwig Sand, a militant member of the Burschenschaften. The murder of Kotzebue gave Metternich the pretext to issue the Carlsbad Decrees of 1819, which dissolved the Burschenschaften, cracked down against the liberal press, and seriously restricted academic freedom in the states of the German Confederation. Johann Amadeus Wendt, 1783-1836, was a German philosopher, composer, and music theorist. He wasa professor at Leipzig, and from 1833 a member of the Akademie der Wissenschaften zu Gottingen. In a half calf binding, with marbled boards. Externally, slightly rubbed. The spine label is missing. Internally, firmly bound. Menschenhass has slight browning, with scattered foxing.
