Although it carries the same title as Bateson's 1902 puplication, it is a new book altogether, THE FIRST ILLUSTRATED TEXTBOOK OF GENETICS incl. the FIRST ENGLISH EDITIONS of both of Mendel's important papers, that of 1866 and 1870. "A translation of the first, based on a draft .was printed in the Royal Horticultural Society's Journal, 1901. With modifications I published it separately in 1902, giving a brief summary of Mendelism as then developed, under the title "Mendel's Priciples of Heredity; A Defence". The object of that publication was to put Mendel's work before the English speaking people and to reply the attack which the late Professor Weldon had recently made on Mendelian methods and the conclusions drawn from them. The edition was at once sold out, but I did not reprint the book. As a defence it had served its purpose and a . useful and relatively permanent presentation of the phenomena can be attempted." "So far as I have discovered there was, up to 1900, only one reference to Mendel's observations . named that of Focke, Pflanzenmischlinge, 1881, page 109 . for those references we may . be grateful since it was through them that the papers were rediscovered".
