Inhaltsangabe: In Sonja Besford’s startling new collection memories are called up – but not just of summers: memories also of love and of war, memories carried by objects (a coffin speaks, a blanket speaks), memories held by Sonja’s ancestors, by soldiers, businessmen, gangsters, a love-crazed ghost, a lamenting cat, a widow ‘mistress to unpredictable whirlwinds and solitary dreams’. The many voices in these mesmerising poems transport us into a world of sharp contrasts, from the ‘heat hazing away in the distance’ in Lagos in 1973, to the cold ‘winter of merciless sanctions’ in Belgrade in 1993. The book ends with the recollections of a group of meditative trees, the willow tree poet ‘fast dream-spinning’ and honoured by the ‘persistent stare’ of the moon. The enticing poems in memories of summers in brist near gradac launch Ambit Books’ series of collections by poets Here from Elsewhere.
