Inhaltsangabe
This book is a riveting and insightful memoir of Rev. Stephen B. Smith. Born to a poor farming family in Rhode Island towards the end of the 18th century, Smith led a life of hardship, punctuated by bouts of truancy and disobedience. Despite the challenges he faced, Smith had an unquenchable thirst for knowledge, pursuing his education independently and excelling in arithmetic and geography. Smith's world was turned upside down with the arrival of secular texts that made him question his religious beliefs. Yet, amidst this spiritual crisis, a sermon by Hosea Ballou at a small gathering by the Mohawk River in upstate New York kindled a spark within him, setting him on the path towards Universalism. Smith became a dedicated advocate of the doctrine of universal salvation, and at the age of 23, he felt a deep sense of duty to spread its message far and wide. Despite Smith's humble beginnings and lack of formal theological training, he became a prominent minister in the Universalist movement, dedicating his life to spreading understanding, love, and compassion through his sermons and writings.
