Chapter One
Rain fell hard and fast as the cloaked figure hurried down the street, her hood hiding her face in shadow. As she climbed to the top of the front steps of a small brick building, a sudden flash of lightning split the starless sky. For just a moment, it lit up the sign on the front door: 6th st. Orphanage. Yes, this was the place.
The woman leaned over and gently placed a small box in front of the door, under the sheltering overhang. Then she hesitated. She reached into the box and gingerly lifted up . . . a tiny baby. She pulled the child close to her for one last tender embrace.

Then her gaze fell to the steps, onto the tiny newborn. Quickly, Mildred threw open the door and gathered the child into her arms. As she turned to take him inside, a shaft of light crossed the baby's face. Mildred stopped, staring into his eyes. There was something special about this baby. He latched onto her heart right then and there. She knew this little one would never let go. She smiled and hugged him tight, carrying him to the warmth inside.
