"The Medical Department of the Army; Its History, Activities and Organization" provides an exhaustive examination of the administrative framework and historical development of the United States Army's medical services. This authoritative work traces the evolution of the department from its early inception through the significant expansions necessitated by major conflicts, including the First World War. It details the intricate organizational structure of the Surgeon General's Office, the Medical Corps, the Dental Corps, the Veterinary Corps, and the Army Nurse Corps.

This volume serves as a critical resource for understanding how the military manages healthcare, sanitation, and the physical well-being of its personnel. The text outlines the various functions of the department, ranging from hospital management and medical supply procurement to laboratory research and the training of specialized personnel. By analyzing the legislative background and the internal mechanics of the service, James A. Tobey offers a clear picture of the vital role the Medical Department plays within the broader context of national defense. This study remains an essential reference for historians of military medicine, public health administrators, and those interested in the institutional history of the American armed forces.
