Zustand: Very Good. New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1971. Twentieth Printing. Quarto; publisher's white pictorial cloth, bright scarlet topstain; [2],xv,[1],684,xxxiipp.; illus. throughout. Cloth a bit worn and yellowed at margins and spine ends, corners bumped, brief thumb-soiling to textblock edges; overall Very Good, clean and sound, though lacking dust jacket. Signed by Julia Child and her husband Paul Child on half title page. The stories of the book and Julia Child are well documented, but less is known of the illustrator, Sidonie Coryn. Coryn was working on fashion design and layout in New York when she was asked to illustrate Mastering the Art, and eventually produced over 450 illustrations for the two volumes. While she never was a foodie (she wanted to be in the studio), her drawings helped a generation of Americans learn to cook, which is all the more remarkable as they were based on black and white photos Paul Child would send her from Norway. Coryn said Julia Child wasn't her buddy, but "she was courteous and had a commanding presence." Asked about seeing the film Julie and Julia when it came out in 2009, she said she didn't intend to, but if someone asked her to go, she would to be polite [Aguilar, Chicago Tribune, September 11, 2009.].
