This collection of ancient Greek poetry, translated by John Young, is a window into the martial spirit of Sparta during the 7th century BCE. The poems, written by the poet-soldier Tyrtaeus, were intended to inspire courage and discipline in Spartan soldiers as they fought against the Messenians. With vivid descriptions of battle scenes and rousing exhortations to bravery, Martial Effusions of Ancient Times is a thrilling glimpse into the culture of one of history's most legendary warrior societies.
