Artikelbeschreibung des Verkäufers

Copper engraving, 320 × 475 mm, printed on paper 335 × 508 mm, verso blank; contemporary outline colour (light scattered staining, mainly to the margins). A map of Upper Podolia, northern Moldavia, and the Dniester frontier, published by Georges-Louis Le Rouge in the "Cartes des Troubles de l’Est", a collection of maps documenting the theatre of the Russo-Turkish War of 1768–1774. Le Rouge, one of the most prolific and versatile French mapmakers of the 18th century, was known for rapidly issuing topical maps to satisfy public interest in unfolding contemporary conflicts. The series is a prime example of this practice, tracking Russian campaigns against the Ottoman Empire along the Polish, Moldavian, and Black Sea frontiers. The present sheet covers the frontier zone of Haute Podolie (Upper Podolia) and northern Moldavie, extending from Halych and Sniatyn in the west to Bar and Medzhybizh in the east, and southwards to Khotyn and Chernivtsi along the Dniester. Few dates of military engagements are marked directly on the map near Khotyn and the Moldavian frontier, recording troop movements and skirmishes during the opening phase of the Russian campaign and the build-up to the siege and eventual capture of the strategically important Ottoman fortress of Khotyn. The map was based on contemporary Polish sources. In Le Rouge atlas it follows a three-sheet map of Volhynia, generally attributed on stylistic grounds to Franciszek Florian Czaki. The map of Podolia is stylistically different. It resembles a map of the southern Polish frontier preserved in the archive of King Stanisław August and attributed to Jan Bakalowicz, or a fragment copied by Jean-Baptiste Bourguignon d’Anville from the Mappa superioris et inferioris Podoliae, autore Joanne Wille, probably referring to Jan de Witte (1709–1785), the Dutch military engineer and architect who participated in the delimitation of the Polish-Russian border. A scarce and important map documenting the military geography of the Polish-Ottoman-Russian frontier during the Russo-Turkish War.…
