Buchbeschreibung Plume Library Trustees, Maldon, first edition, 1959, 1959. Cloth, 8vo, 24 cm, xvi, 192 pp. From the introduction: "Thomas Plume, the founder of the Library, was born in 1630 at Maldon in Essex. He was educated at Chelmsford Grammar School and at Christ's College, Cambridge. He took his B.A. and M.A. in 1649, was admitted B.D. in 1661 and D.D. in 1673. In 1658 he was instituted Vicar of Greenwich. In 1662 Plume received the sinecure of Merston, Kent; and in 1665 he became Rector of Little Easton. In 1679 he was installed Archdeacon of Rochester."From the preface: "The Plume Library is of special interest because it has come down to us almost intact, thanks, as Mr. Deed shows in his preface, to Plume's foresight in providing some endowment for it. Its six or seven thousand volumes represent largely the library as it was built up by Plume himself and it seems to be curiously unaffected by any additions made with the small annual sum of money which was left by Plume for the purchase of current books. The library is thus very largely Plume's own library. It shows not only the many works of theology, philosophy, and religious controversy one would expect to find in the library of a parson-scholar of the seventeenth century but also books reflecting Plume's special interest in astronomy, medicine, and science generally. Among the authors represented in the catalogue are Blaeu, Boyle, Brahe, Campanella, Dee, Descartes, Digby, Flamsteed, Galileo, Gassendi, Gesner, Glanvil, Glisson, Halley, Harvey, Helmont, Huygens, Keppler, Lavater, Locke, Manilius, Ray, Record, Schooten, and many others eminent in these fields. Plume was interested in geography and travels as is shown by Sir Francis Drake's World encompassed, 1628, Ogilby, Ortelius and Mercator, Speed and Tavernier. Antìquaries are represented by Ashmole, Camden, Dugdale, Spelman, and many others; the practical side of Plume's collecting is indicated by copies of clockmaker John Smith's Horological dialogues, 1675, and Andrew Snape's Anatomy of cut horse, 1687."
