The re-release of MOY BELL returns as a powerful account of one of the most iconic symbols in BUD/S training history—now formally recognized within Naval Special Warfare heritage, with the replica Moy Bell placed on permanent display at the San Diego Navy SEAL Museum in 2025, donated by the MOY family.
At its origin, the Moy Bell was a simple Navy brass ship’s bell gifted by a tugboat captain to Chief Moy during his unpresidented five year term as a BUDS instructor during the Vietnam era. Retired Master Chief Terry “Mother” Moy, BUD/S instructor and SEAL Team 1 operator, initially kept the bell at his home before it was brought into the training environment. At the time, trainees could quietly “opt out” of BUD/S without visibility or shared accountability. Moy recognized a gap—not in physical endurance, but in psychological clarity.
To address this, he introduced the bell into the instructor’s office environment, mounted on a stanchion for all trainees to see. The rule was simple: any candidate who chose to quit training would ring the bell three times. The sound was unmistakable—resonant, maritime, and deeply symbolic. It carried across the training grounds like a ship’s signal at sea, marking a decision that could not be taken back in silence.
The Moy Bell changed the nature of quitting. It introduced pause, reflection, and accountability. It ensured that a trainee’s decision to leave was no longer private or impulsive, but deliberate and fully acknowledged. In many cases, it created the space for reconsideration—allowing exhausted trainees to step back from emotional decisions made under stress and return with renewed resolve.
Rather than encouraging departure, the bell slowed it down. It confronted candidates with the reality of their choice while reinforcing the culture of endurance. In a place where “the only easy day was yesterday,” the bell became a psychological checkpoint between quitting and continuing.
BUD/S Class 58 later dedicated the bell back to the program after graduation, transforming it from an instructor’s tool into a permanent symbol of SEAL training culture. From that moment forward, the Moy Bell represented more than an object—it became a shared tradition embedded in the identity of Naval Special Warfare training.
Its meaning is simple but profound: no trainee leaves unnoticed, and no decision to quit is made without full awareness. It stands for accountability, discipline, and the internal battle every candidate faces when fatigue and doubt collide with commitment and purpose.

Now honored in the San Diego Navy SEAL Museum, the Moy Bell continues its legacy as both a training symbol and a historical artifact. It reflects a culture built on resilience, brotherhood, and the understanding that true quitting is never quiet—it is witnessed, acknowledged, and remembered. The original brass ship bell is also known as "hells bell" by those who endure hell week, the final week of BUDS training. The ship bell is also rung at the yearly West Coast Navy SEAL reunion in Coronado, CA, to remember every fallen SEAL from that year during the swim out of ashes. Honoring those who gave all for their country. This iconic bell is known by every candidate and Navy SEAL who comes through Basic Underwater Demolition SEAL training.
