Artikelbeschreibung des Verkäufers

WRITTEN BY A MAN WHO WALKED OUT OF THE ARCTIC. Rather than relying upon official naval reports or later histories, this account was compiled by Raymond Lee Newcomb, naturalist aboard the USS Jeannette and one of only thirteen survivors of the expedition. Drawing upon his own experiences together with the recovered journals of Lieutenant Commander George W. De Long, it remains among the earliest published narratives of one of nineteenth-century America's most celebrated Arctic disasters. A Survivor's Record Sent north through the Bering Strait in search of an open route to the North Pole, the Jeannette became imprisoned in the polar pack before being crushed after nearly two years of drift. Newcomb follows the expedition from scientific optimism through catastrophe, the desperate retreat across the Siberian Arctic, and the recovery of De Long's final journals. The result is both an intensely personal survival narrative and an important contemporary record of exploration, science, and endurance. PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Publisher's dark brown cloth stamped in black, white, and gilt, featuring a striking pictorial design of the Jeannette imprisoned in Arctic ice beneath four gilt gulls on the front board and spine. Octavo; 8.75 inches tall; xv, [3], 18-479, [3] pages. Frontispiece group portrait of the officers, 115 wood-engraved illustrations, maps, charts, structural diagrams, and the official expedition program. American Publishing Company issue, dated 1883 on the title page, with the copyright page bearing the 1882 notice of A. L. Bancroft & Co., San Francisco. Without additional bibliographical evidence, this issue is conservatively described as an early issue rather than assigned edition priority. CONDITION: Very Good. Binding remains tight and square with moderate shelf wear and light rubbing consistent with age. Hinges show minor distress but remain sound. Interior is clean with light, even age-toning. A well-preserved example retaining its attractive Victorian pictorial binding. KEY FEATURES +++ A Survivor's Narrative - Written by expedition naturalist Raymond Lee Newcomb, whose firsthand account preserves the perspective of one of only thirteen survivors. +++ Recovered Journals - Incorporates the journals of Lieutenant Commander George W. De Long together with the accounts of the three escape parties. +++ Science Saved from the Ice - Preserves meteorological, oceanographic, zoological, and astronomical observations recovered from the expedition. +++ Across Siberia - Includes Newcomb's remarkable overland journey through the Lena Delta and Siberia to St. Petersburg, with observations of Indigenous communities and Russian settlements. +++ Illustrated Expedition Record - Richly illustrated with maps, charts, structural diagrams, portraits, and more than one hundred wood engravings documenting the voyage. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE -Documenting an Arctic Disaster. Raymond Lee Newcomb served as naturalist aboard the USS Jeannette and was among the small number of survivors who escaped after the vessel was crushed in the Arctic ice. His account combines firsthand observation with the journals recovered from Lieutenant Commander George W. De Long, preserving one of the earliest comprehensive narratives of the expedition. Changing Arctic Exploration The loss of the Jeannette profoundly influenced later polar exploration. Scientific observations gathered during the voyage helped undermine the long-standing theory of an Open Polar Sea while the discovery of drifting wreckage contributed to a broader understanding of Arctic Ocean currents. The expedition became a defining episode in nineteenth-century polar exploration and shaped later American and international expeditions. A Lasting Exploration Narrative Beyond recounting tragedy, Newcomb's narrative captures the realities of scientific fieldwork, leadership, endurance, and survival under extreme conditions. It remains one of the standard contemporary accounts of the Jeannette expedit.…
