A light hearted look at the world of heart surgery is not only desirable, it’s essential at this most traumatic time in ones life. The author takes us on an amusing journey through a triple bypass procedure (Colloquially referred to as CABG (Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting) in the medical profession) from the first tentative steps into the maze of hospital admission, to final rehabilitation. This is a journey that captures the very serious side of heart repair and the very necessary entertaining aspect of the theatre. With a capacity to find the humorous side of a most daunting event the author digresses from the world of reality and personal experience into creative fantasy that provides the reader with an escape mechanism prior to, during and after CABG. But the appeal extends to not only those that are contemplating or have undergone the procedure, but also their friends and associates, the medical fraternity and anyone needing a good laugh. After all, isn’t laughter the best tonic? This narrative takes us out of the hospital ward and onto a tour through time and space. It captures the primitive medical practices of America’s Wild West, the ground breaking advances in scientific research throughout Europe and the experiences of life that allows the author to believe, “There has to be a comical side to all aspects of life”.As a valuable contribution to understanding the patients point of view, ‘The Lighter Side Of Cabbage’ should be mandatory reading for all medical students and an essential inclusion in the libraries of all medical schools worldwide.
