The Life of the Somali People in Two Continents: Challenges, Achievements and Conduct is a rare and candid account of what it has meant to be Somali across two worlds - the pastoral landscapes of East Africa and the cities of the United States - written from inside the community it describes. Osman Dirie Egal has lived both lives. Raised in the traditions of Somali rural and nomadic society, he later built his family in the United States and spent more than three decades watching, participating in, and thinking hard about what happens when a people carry their culture across an ocean. This book is the record of that observation - direct, honest, and grounded in lived experience rather than academic distance. The first section of the book turns to Somalia itself: the rhythms of pastoral life, the systems of customary dispute resolution, marriage and dowry practices, mutual-aid traditions, the heroism of the struggle for independence, and the social structures that held Somali communities together long before anyone had heard of a refugee camp. These are presented not as nostalgia but as inheritance - the part of Somali identity that crossed the ocean even when people crossed with nothing. The second and larger part of the book follows the Somali community in the United States from the arrival of the first wave of refugees in the early 1990s through to the present. It covers the building of mosques and Islamic schools from scratch; the extraordinary and largely uncelebrated role of Somali women in fundraising, household preservation, and education; the economics of Somali commerce and the rise of Somali businesses in cities like Minneapolis, Columbus, and Seattle; the challenges facing Somali youth - from language barriers and identity crisis to the pull of gangs and the erosion of parental authority; the rising rate of divorce and delayed marriage; the generation gap between parents raised in Somalia and children raised in American classrooms; and the persistence of clan and tribalism, now amplified by social media, that continues to divide communities who would be stronger united. The book does not flinch from difficulty. Where it describes failure - in a mosque committee, in a household divided between two cultures, in a community that has sometimes turned inward when it needed to reach outward - it does so because, as the author writes, a community that can name its own difficulties is a community capable of overcoming them. Where it describes achievement, it does so because those achievements deserve to be recorded before the people who lived them are gone and the record is lost with them. Complete with a full bibliography and index, this is essential reading for Somali families in the diaspora, for their children born and raised in the West, for educators and social workers working with refugee and immigrant communities, and for anyone interested in the lived experience of one of the most remarkable migration stories of the past thirty years.

Über die Autorin bzw. den Autor
Osman Dirie Egal is a Somali community leader, writer, and observer who has lived and worked within the Somali diaspora in the United States for over three decades. Born and raised in Somalia, he carries first-hand knowledge of both the pastoral traditions of rural Somali life and the daily realities of Somali families rebuilding their lives in the West. He writes from within the community he documents - as a father, a community participant, and a witness to the extraordinary social transformation of Somalis in America since the early 1990s. The Life of the Somali People in Two Continents is his first book. He can be contacted at birmadegal@gmail.com.
