This handsome cloth-bound book of 40 pages, including 19 beautifully illustrated full pages, covers a very moving story, carefully and thoughtfully written for young persons (ages 9 – 15) by a survivor of the Holocaust as hidden child during World War II. This book is truly unique as a first-person account by the author of survival when he was in hiding with a righteous gentile retired policeman, his wife, and an adopted daughter during perhaps the most vile and vicious human disaster in history. The persons who saved “Leo” did not even know his name or where he came from. The story is told and illustrated in a manner to be understood and appreciated by young persons in terms and language specifically for them. The idea for this book came from a number of Zoom calls and in-person talks by Mr. Ullman to young students. Mr. Ullman’s story has been chronicled in greater detail in his widely distributed book, “796 Days”, first printed in 2015, and in an abridged edition of that book. His story has also been featured in a number of movies, videos, podcasts, on various media platforms, as well as in articles, personal appearances at private and public high schools, college and universities, churches, synagogues, the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum, and many other Holocaust Remembrance Centers. His background includes, among other things, decades as a director and chairman of the Anne Frank Center USA and Foundations for the Netherlands National Holocaust Museum and the Jewish Cultural Quarter. The wonderful and meaningful illustrations are by Michelle Shain, a brilliant artist, and herself an author, and illustrator of several books for children.
