Silvanus Phillips Thompson (1851 - 1916) was physicist who worked as professor of physics at the City and Guilds Technical College in Finsbury, England. He became a member of the Royal Society in 1891, and is most remembered for his work as an engineer. This text is being republished now in an affordable, modern, high-quality edition - complete with a specially commissioned new biography of the author.
