xii, 291, [1] pages. DJ is price clipped. Some page discoloration. Inscribed by the author on the half title page. Inscription reads To Duck, Happy 90th Birthday!! May you always carry Duke in your heart. My Best Wishes Always, Mike Krzyzewski. Illustration. Includes Foreword by Grant Hill, who played basketball with Coach K. at Duke University. Topics covered in the book include Preseason, Regular Season, Postseason, The Core of Character, Friendship, and Life. Also includes Epilogue, Acknowledgments, Index, and About the Authors. Michael William Krzyzewski (nicknamed "Coach K"; born February 13, 1947) is a college basketball coach. Since 1980, he has served as the head men's basketball coach at Duke University, where he has led the Blue Devils to five NCAA Championships, 12 Final Fours, 15 ACC Championships, and 12 ACC regular season titles. Krzyzewski has also coached the United States men's national basketball team, which he has led to three gold medals at the 2008 Summer Olympics, 2012 Summer Olympics, and 2016 Summer Olympics. He was also an assistant coach for the 1992 "Dream Team". Krzyzewski is a two-time inductee into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, in 2001 for his individual coaching career and in 2010 as part of the collective induction of the "Dream Team". He was inducted into the United States Olympic Hall of Fame in 2009 (with the "Dream Team"). On January 25, 2015, Duke defeated St. John's, 77-68, as Krzyzewski became the first Division I men's basketball coach to reach 1,000 wins. From his tenure as the Duke head coach, Coach K illustrates his leadership insights and shows how to summon the courage to endure adversity and critics, how to think on your feet, Take responsibility for how your team performs, and give your players time and attention--give your players 100 percent of your focus, and they will commit 100 percent of their effort. Derived from a Publishers Weekly review: Duke basketball coach Krzyzewski, today's most successful NCAA coach, reviews significant games and key events in his career in addition to offering advice to coaches, players and anyone trying to do better in life. He got an appointment to West Point, where he became an accomplished player before becoming a coach. His approach is direct and simple: what's most important is working as a team toward a common goal--not necessarily to win the game, but to play the best possible game. Says Coach K, "There are five fundamental qualities that make every team great: communication, trust, collective responsibility, caring and pride." Approaching each season the same way, he extends himself to his players, encouraging them to spend time at his home and with his family, while emphasizing the importance of keeping up with academics and enjoying the overall experience of college. In fact, Krzyzewski tries to hire assistant coaches who have played for him because they're versed in on- and off-court problems. At the end of each chapter, he offers general pointers, such as that "business, like basketball, is a game of adjustments. So be ready to adjust." Although he occasionally refers to a coach as a "leader," for the most part he leaves it up to readers to connect the dots between his coaching strategies and useful business strategies.
