While I did not accept in haste the invitation of the Insti tute, with which you have honored me, yet I have repented at leisure. While I fully appreciate the Compliment Of the invitation, yet owing to a combination of circumstances, I have found it impossible to give to the subject the time and attention which the dignity of the audience, as well as the interesting Character of the subject, alike require.
