On 28 February 1986, Swedish Prime Minister Olof Palme and his wife, Lisbeth Palme, left a cinema and walked through central Stockholm without a visible security cordon. Near Sveavägen and Tunnelgatan, a man approached from behind and fired two shots. Olof Palme was fatally wounded. Lisbeth survived. The gunman escaped into the city.
The Last Walk is a restrained narrative nonfiction account of the Olof Palme assassination and the vast, disputed investigation that followed. Rather than selecting the most dramatic conspiracy theory or presenting suspicion as fact, Daniel Hartsfield reconstructs the public record surrounding the street, the witnesses, the bullets, the missing revolver, the first police response, and the evidence that repeatedly failed to carry certainty into court.
The book traces how an apparently simple physical sequence became one of modern Europe’s most enduring unsolved murder cases. It examines the pressure of investigating the killing of a serving head of government, the early commitment to political theories, crime-scene and coordination failures, conflicting witness accounts, and the widening archive of leads, confessions, vehicles, suspects, and unanswered questions.
At the center is the prosecution of Christer Pettersson, who was convicted at first instance in 1989 and later unanimously acquitted on appeal. The account treats that acquittal as the final legal outcome and explores the evidentiary limits surrounding identification, motive, weapon, and corroboration. It also follows the later focus on Stig Engström, named by a prosecutor as the prime suspect in 2020 after his death, and the 2025 prosecutorial review that found the evidence insufficient to identify him as the perpetrator.
Beyond the suspect theories, The Last Walk asks a harder question: how should an unresolved historical true crime case be written when official closure and legal proof are not the same thing? The investigation may be closed, but the murder remains unsolved. No named person is presented as the proven gunman.
Victim-centered and evidence-aware, this book restores Olof Palme as a husband, father, public servant, and political figure before returning to the national consequences of his death. It also recognizes Lisbeth Palme as a surviving victim whose memory was asked to bear extraordinary legal and public weight.
