Bailey Evans uses wisecracks and a dry humor to keep people from discovering her loneliness and desperate need for support, kindness, and understanding while she tries to cope with her parents' divorce, her brother's leaving, and her father's imminent remarriageFrom School Library Journal:
Grade 6-8 The story of a young girl's struggle toward maturity is told by Bailey Evans, a 12-year-old faced with more than her share of change and loss. Bailey's alcoholic mother has long since left home, and Bailey and her older brother, Claude, have learned to lean on each other. Now, Bailey's father is planning to marry his girlfriend Janet; Claude is joining the army after breaking off with his unfaithful girlfriend. Bailey's resistance to change takes several forms; she throws tantrums, she plots to bring Marlene and Claude back together and, when nothing appears to be working out, she tries to run away to her mother. Finally, Janet's cheery attitude and unselfishness have a positive effect on Bailey, and she resolves herself to moving in with her new stepmother. The sharply defined characters provoke sympathy, especially Claude and Bailey. The first-person narrative brings a sense of immediacy to the action, the dialogue is, at times, painfully realistic, and Bailey's emotional outbursts punctuate the compelling plot. Although the present-tense narrative occasionally becomes tiresome, Bailey is believable, and through her eyes, Osborne shows the tension and emotion of some very dramatic moments. One of the strengths of Osborne's style is her careful attention to the details of character action and reaction. Her finely crafted characterization enhances this affecting story about the difficulties of coping. Phyllis Graves, Creekwood Middle School, Kingwood, Tex.
