Half red morocco, red marbled paper boards, five raised spine bands rolled in gilt, spine ruled in gilt, red morocco gilt stamped spine label (lacking on vol. II). Marbled edges. Wear to edges and extremities, joints rubbed and starting. Egerton Castle's striking Egyptian-flavoured ex libris to front pastedowns, 'Egerton Castle' stamped in red to title pages, else, clean and tight. Good+ A sumptuously bound set of the works of Sir John Suckling from the library of Egerton Castle, the Victorian author, antiquarian and swordsman, featuring his striking Egyptian-flavoured bookplate. The grandson and namesake of the publishing magnate and philanthropist Egerton Smith, Egerton Smith Castle M. A. F.S.A. (1858 1920) was, aptly, an expert on bookplates and a keen collector. A practitioner of historical fencing, often performing with Captain Alfred Hutton, he also captained the British épée and sabre teams at the 1908 Summer Olympics. Half leather, marbled paper boards.
