It is composed of almost one hundred letters received by Lafcadio Hearn from Basil Hall Chamberlain, the great Japanologist and scholar of the late 19th century. There association was of a high order and the intellectual association showed a perfect understanding between them. . These letters offer a keen insight to a wide variety of subjects frankly discussed. Some candid topics cover "shalls and wills," the woman question and a host of others. . This is an important primary source. Chamberlain was instrumental in getting Hearn employment as a teacher in Japan. . *** This book is a companion volume to an earlier book also by Kazuo: MORE LETTERS FROM BASIL HALL CHAMBERLAIN TO LAFCADIO HEARN AND LETTERS FROM M.
