KARATE UNDER PRESSURE
The Resilient Mindset for Kumite & Kata Competition

You have trained for months.

Your technique is ready.

Then the referee calls "Hajime."

Your breathing changes.

Your timing disappears.

The techniques you have performed thousands of times suddenly feel unfamiliar.

It isn't a lack of skill.

It's pressure.

Karate Under Pressure reveals why even experienced competitors struggle when the stakes are highest—and provides a practical framework to help you develop the confidence, focus, and mental resilience needed to perform at your best.

Drawing on more than fifty years of Shotokan karate experience and a doctorate in behavioural science, Dr. Amadeus M. Kubicek (Renshi, 6th Dan) combines evidence-based sports psychology with real-world competition experience to bridge the gap between dojo performance and tournament performance.

Whether you compete in kata, kumite, or both, this book will help you train your mind with the same discipline you train your technique.

INSIDE YOU WILL LEARN HOW TO:

• Understand why pressure causes skilled karate practitioners to underperform—and how to prevent it.

• Develop greater confidence before stepping onto the competition floor, regardless of your experience level.

• Maintain focus when nerves, distractions, and expectations threaten your performance.

• Regulate emotion so excitement, fear, and anxiety become performance assets instead of obstacles.

• Make faster, clearer decisions under pressure during kata and kumite competition.

• Recover quickly after mistakes without allowing one error to affect the rest of your performance.

• Build lasting mental resilience that strengthens both your competitive performance and your lifelong karate practice.

• Apply practical mental training strategies immediately in the dojo and on competition day.

Unlike general sports psychology books written for a broad athletic audience, Karate Under Pressure focuses exclusively on the unique psychological demands of competitive karate.

Every chapter explores the realities of both kata and kumite, combining practical examples with evidence-based principles to help competitors understand why pressure disrupts performance—and how to respond with greater composure, confidence, and control.

Each chapter concludes with:

• Practical Implications for Training

• Karate for Life Reflection

• Summary Reflection

• Self-Review Questions

allowing you to immediately apply the concepts to your own preparation and competition experience.

PERFECT FOR:

• Karate competitors preparing for tournaments

• Kata and kumite athletes

• Adult practitioners returning to competition

• Karate instructors and coaches

• Parents supporting young competitors

• Martial artists interested in sports psychology, mental training, and athlete confidence

It also makes a thoughtful gift for any karate practitioner seeking to compete with greater confidence and mental resilience.

Competition does not simply test your technique.

It tests your attention.

Your emotional control.

Your confidence.

Your decision-making.

When the referee calls "Hajime," your preparation is already complete.

Train your mind with the same discipline you train your technique—and step onto the competition floor ready to perform when the pressure is greatest.
