Few mathematical mysteries have captured the imagination as much as pi: the ratio of a circle's circumference to its diameter. For four thousand years we have struggled with this magical number. In THE JOY OF PI David Blatner tells its bizarre story: from Archimedes to da Vinci, from Newton to the Chudnovsky brothers, currently calculating pi to billions of places with a homemade supercomputer. 'It is hardly an overstatement to call pi the most important number in the history of civilisation...[Blatner] takes the reader on a colourful, visually rich tour through this still incompletely known number's rich history as a mathematical holy grail' - Publisher's Weekly
