What makes an NBA player a star? Is it the spectacular highlights or flashy dunks? Maybe it is the endorsements paid by global companies. How about putting up impressive numbers such as points, rebounds, or assists? Could that be it? Maybe it is the impact they have on the game of basketball.

The answer is none of the above. In the narrative-driven world of sports journalism, an NBA star is defined by whether he wins or loses. Dallas Mavericks star Dirk Nowitzki was widely panned as a choker when the Mavericks collapsed in the 2007 first round, but today, he is revered as an all-time great after winning the 2011 title.
