In John of the Cross for Today: The Dark Night, Susan Muto brings her considerable knowledge and skill to bear on the sixteenth-century masterpiece, making it alive and accessible for today's readers. Her readable interpretation and commentary opens up John's spiritual wisdom in a relevant and timely manner. Her presentation of the The Dark Night provides two outstanding featurs. She adopts the formative --contrasted with informative -- approach to spiritual reading. This is a slowed-down, dwelling, and editative reading that asks the reader to be receptive to the text in its multi=-fauceted meanings. And she offers an excellent rationale for bringing John's message to those seeking an authentic spiritual life.
