Jerome woke up before the sun. His yellow shirt was folded on the chair, his backpack was waiting by the door, and everything was ready, almost. When the school building looks big, and his heart beats fast, it is Grandma who bends low and gives him something no backpack can carry: the reminder that he is Gullah Geechee, that he comes from strong people, and that strong people know how to be the one to smile first. Armed with those words and a belly full of warm grits, Jerome takes a deep breath and walks through the door. What he finds on the other side will stay with every young reader long after the last page is turned.

Jerome's First Day of School is the fifth book in the Jerome and the Tapestry of Time series by Dr. Sherman J. Morris, and it carries forward everything that has made this series so beloved: the warmth of family kitchens, the wisdom of grandparents and uncles, and the deep, abiding pride of the Gullah Geechee tradition. From learning where his people came from, to navigating the world with dignity and courage, Jerome has been growing one story at a time. Now he carries everything his family has given him through a brand new door — and discovers that learning is not separate from who he is. It is another thread in the tapestry his family has been weaving long before he was born.

This is a series built for young readers who deserve to see themselves on the page, and for every child, of every background, who has ever been told by someone who loves them: you come from strong people. Each book in the Jerome and the Tapestry of Time series opens a new door to family, history, courage, and love, inviting readers to follow Jerome as he grows, questions, discovers, and adds his own threads to a story that is still being woven. Begin with The Legacy of the Gullah Geechee People, continue with The Journey Through the Green Book, then Taste the Love and Uncle Tim and the First Fish, and now, Jerome's First Day of School. Stay close, because Jerome's tapestry is not finished yet.
