The celebrations which marked the accession of the Republic of Cyprus to the European Union on 1st May 2004 signalled the end of a fourteen year process since the island had first applied to join - and the end of six full years of complicated and intense negotiations. This book examines the process of accession and its wide-reaching repercussions.

James Ker-Lindsay is LSEE Visiting Professor at the London School of Economics, UK. His research focuses on conflict, peace and security in South East Europe, European Union enlargement, and secession and recognition in international politics. He is the author of The Foreign Policy of Counter Secession (2012), The Cyprus Problem (2011), Kosovo (2009), among others.

Hubert Faustmann is Professor of History at University of Nicosia, Cyprus. He is the co-author and co-editor of several books, including When the Cemetery Becomes Political: Dealing with the Religious Heritage in Multi-Ethnic Regions (2020) and Education in a Multicultural Cyprus (2017).
