The Iron Samurai is the story Louie Simmons never told on a platform or in a seminar—the life behind Westside Barbell and the mindset that built the strongest gym on earth. Written in the voice of his alter ego, “The Iron Samurai,” this book tracks Louie from a trouble-making kid in Reynoldsburg, Ohio, to an elite lifter, inventor, and coach whose lifters have broken more than 100 all-time world records.

Across decades of stories, Louie walks you through early meets with legends like Larry Pacifico, Vince Anello, and George Crawford, the influence of the original Westside Barbell in Culver City, and the garage years that produced the first generation of Columbus Westside lifters. You’ll see the injuries that nearly ended his career—broken back, torn biceps, torn patella tendon—and how they pushed him toward Soviet sport science, the Conjugate System, and inventions like the Reverse Hyper and belt squat that changed strength training worldwide.

The Iron Samurai also opens the doors of Westside itself: the first “Magnificent Seven” lifters in the garage, the birth of Nitro the pit bull logo, the move from garage to gym, and the rise of monsters like Chuck Vogelpohl, Kenny Patterson, Amy Weisberger, Laura Phelps, and Dave Hoff. Louie details the politics of powerlifting federations, money meets, the creation of the WPO, and why Westside always chose lifters and progress over approval.

Woven through the fights, road stories, and world-record training cycles is Louie’s philosophy on loyalty, risk, pain, and purpose—the ball or the sword. From the Dead Room wall of fallen lifters to his work with NFL players, Olympians, and fighters, he shows what it really costs to live for strength and to build a gym where quitting is the only unforgivable sin.

For anyone who has watched Westside from afar, trains Conjugate, or just wants to understand what it takes to build something original and uncompromising, The Iron Samurai is Louie Simmons’ own account of the culture, people, and decisions that made Westside Barbell what it is.
