He attended the University of Wisconsin, where he played Big Ten Conference basketball, and then went on to train in internal medicine and cardiology at the premiere teaching medical center Mayo Clinic, Rochester. He is a writer, teacher, and lecturer on health throughout the United States as well as the author of numerous scholarly medical articles and book chapters.
