Introducing Postfeminism

As we enter the new millennium, the role of women continues to be questioned. Postmodernism has confronted institutional authority and given more power to the marginalized, but how has feminism repositioned itself in the challenge to patriarchy? In the shift from feminism to postfeminism, women have begun to celebrate difference rather than equality. The postmodern culture of the 1990s has already seen the emergence of a new female icon. Tough, sexy and irreverent, she does not see herself as a victim, and she wants power. But having deconstructed women's culture, what does the future hold for postfeminism? Introducing Postfeminism traces the effect of French feminist theory on contemporary gender politics and culture, and describes how postfeminist theorists have drawn from a range of discourses including psychoanalysis, poststructuralism, postmodernism and postcolonialism to develop our understanding of the feminine.
