Beschreibung:

Large 4to. pp. 551 [i.e., 669], [51]. Roman letter. Woodcut printer s device to title, decorated initials and ornaments. Title a little dusty, three minor marginal repairs, slight age browning, contemporary ex-libris and ms marginalia gently washed (now nearly invisible) to title and initial ll., and occasionally elsewhere, few tiny marginal worm holes and a little marginal foxing to last gathering. A very good, wide-margined copy in late C18 southern Italian polished calf, gilt rolls of dentelles and interlacing lilies to outer border, central panel with large gilt cornerpieces of fleurons and tendrils, gilt unidentified armorial centrepieces with Italian pine and two crossed palm fronds within decorative frame, outer edges gilt, marbled eps and flyleaves c1900, a.e.g., corners a bit worn, expert repair to head and foot of spine, a.e.g., green silk marker. The fine binding was probably produced in the third quarter of the C18. The unidentified armorial centrepiece is also found on the vellum binding of a law book printed in 1752, now at the Bib. dell Archiginnasio (ZANARDI M*. 2). The rocaille decoration recalls that on several bindings attributed to workshops based in Rome (e.g., Braidense nos 24, 26, 32) and Naples ( Legature , pl.5). A handsome Estienne edition, a very close reprint of Simon de Colines quarto of 1541. Quintilian s Institutio Oratoria was the main text for the study of classical rhetoric until way into the C18 the most complete and detailed collection of the historical development of theories and techniques of communication in Greece and Rome up to the first century (Celentano, p.361). Written in the 1st century AD and rediscovered in 1416, it introduced students to the basic principles of rhetoric, e.g., orations, their elements, tropes and figures of speech. Issued without the editor s preface, it begins with Quintilian s own letter to his publisher, Trypho, who had allegedly been pressing him to finish his work the result of 20 years of teaching on the best education of the orator. The 12 books deal with preparatory material, the nature of rhetoric and its elements (inventio, dispositio, elocutio, memoria, actio), the character of the orator, and how he should study, prepare and argue his cases. The Institutio has been described as four major works blended into one: a treatise on education, a manual of rhetoric, a reader s guide to the best authors, and a handbook on the moral duties of the perfect orator (Murphy, p.59). Hardcover. Zustand: Fine. QUINTILIANUS, Marcus Fabius. Institutionum oratoriarum Libri XII. Paris, Ex officina Roberti Stephani Typographi Regii, 1542. £1250 4to, 551 (=651) (li), a-z8 A-Y8. Roman letter, very sporadic Greek type. Printer's device on title page. Capital spaces with guide-letters. Slightly trimmed. Early marginalia in a clear Latin calligraphy and underlining by different hands, a few seemingly washed, or erased, in any case well faded. Occasional recent pencil marks. In a modern straight-grain gilt morocco binding, fleurons at centre of covers and borders, spine in compartments with alternate pattern of fleurons and dices, dentelle borders, a.e.r. A fine copy. This is Robert Estienne's edition of the Institutes of Oratory in twelve volumes by the Spanish-born Roman rhetorician Quintilian (ca. 35-100 AD), which is one of the most renowned and popular works on the theory and practice of oratory. The work had an incredible influence, especially during the Renaissance, on Western tradition of political oratory. In Rome Quintilian met with great success as a teacher and was the first rhetorician to set up a genuine public school and to receive a salary from the State. He continued to teach for twenty years and among his pupils were Pliny the Younger and the two sons of Domitilla, the sister of Domitian. As a stylist, though he is often difficult owing to compression and the epigrammatic turn which he gives his phrases, he is never affected or extravagant. He is still under the influence of the sound traditions of the Ciceronian age, and his Latin is silver-gilt rather than silver. His Institutio Oratoria, despite the fact that much of it is highly technical, has much that is of interest to‑day, even for those who care little for the history of rhetoric. Notably in the first book his precepts as regards education have lasting value: they may not be strikingly original, but they are sound, humane and admirably put. In the more technical portions of his work he is unequalled; the reader feels that he cares but little about the minute pedantics of rhetorical technique, and that he lacks method in his presentation of the varying views held by his predecessors. But once he is free of such minor details and touches on themes of real practical interest, he is a changed man. He is very eloquent, and always vigorous and sound, while throughout the whole work he keeps the same ideal unswervingly before him. Adams Q64. Artikel-Nr. ABE-1521728202293

Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. 2nd Edition. FINE COPY Large 8vo. ff. [4], 230. Italic letter, occasional Greek. Woodcut Aldine device to title and last verso, decorated initials and ornaments. Title and last verso a little dusty, repair to upper blank gutter of both, light water stain at blank foot of gathering c, another to upper blank gutter of first and outer upper blank corner of last couple of ll., little worm trail at blank foot of last 3 ll. A very good, tall, clean copy in c1840 crushed blue morocco, triple gilt ruled, gilt rosettes to corners, gilt Aldine device to covers, spine gilt, inner edges gilt, marbled eps, a.e.g., early ms 'de innocentio doion' to title and a1. A very good, well-margined, clean copy of the second Aldine edition of Quintilian's most influential manual of rhetoric. Edited by Naugerius and G.B. Ramusio, it includes a new table of Greek words, absent in the first. The text is modelled on that of the 1515 Giunta edition. Quintilian's 'Institutio Oratoria' was the main text for the study of classical rhetoric until way into the C18 'the most complete and detailed collection of the historical development of theories and techniques of communication in Greece and Rome up to the first century' (Celentano, p.361). Written in the 1st century AD and rediscovered in 1416, it introduced students to the basic principles of rhetoric, e.g., orations, their elements, tropes and figures of speech. Issued without the editor's preface, it begins with Quintilian's own letter to his publisher, Trypho, who had allegedly been pressing him to finish his work the result of 20 years of teaching on the best education of the orator. The 12 books deal with preparatory material, the nature of rhetoric and its elements (inventio, dispositio, elocutio, memoria, actio), the character of the orator, and how he should study, prepare and argue his cases. 'The Institutio has been described as four major works blended into one: a treatise on education, a manual of rhetoric, a reader's guide to the best authors, and a handbook on the moral duties of the perfect orator' (Murphy, p.59). Innocentio Doion was likely a member of the influential aristocratic Doglioni family, from Belluno. In 1625, he is recorded as one of the witnesses at the reading of the Bishop of Belluno's will. Renouard 154:1 (mentions 1522 title imprint, not present here); Ahmanson-Murphy 208 (attributed to 1522); EDIT16 CNCE 54149; Dibdin I, 335. M.S. Celentano, 'Oratorical Exercises from the Rhetoric to Alexander to the Institutio oratoria', Rhetorica, 29 (2011), pp.35765; J. Murphy, 'The Structure and Contents of the Institutio oratoria', The Oxford Handbook to Quintilian (2021), pp.59-94; Archivio Veneto (1934), p.207. Artikel-Nr. L2136
