Recipient of Choice Magazine's 1996 Outstanding Academic Book Award Finalist for the George Terry Award sponsored by the Academy of Management "Institutions and Organizations is an outstanding book. . . . No other work takes us with such eloquence from institutional theory's earliest historical roots to leading-edge developments or succeeds so brilliantly in showcasing the best and brightest insights from institutional research. Professor Scott's analysis is an extraordinarily impressive and richly informative achievement. No serious student of organizations will want to neglect this book." --Christine Oliver, York University "W. Scott, a leading figure in the sociology of organizations, has written an engaging and sophisticated book. It constitutes a major stocktaking of developments in this disciplinary specialty, which have moved in several intriguing and promising directions since the mid-1970s." --Choice Institutions and Organizations provides a concise yet comprehensive overview of the institutionalist approach to organization theory. W. Richard Scott presents a historical overview of the theoretical literature, an integrative analysis of current institutional approaches, and a review of empirical research related to institutions and organizations. The text offers an extensive review and critique of institutional analysis in sociology, political science, and economics as it relates to recent theory and research on organizations, and describes how these approaches differ both in terms of problems addressed and answers proposed. The rapidly growing body of empirical research on the institutional aspects of organizations is thoroughly reviewed and clearly presented. Remaining controversies are discussed and new and promising directions of investigation are discerned. A thought-provoking volume, Institutions and Organizations will be essential for students, scholars, and professionals in organization and management studies.
