Das Studium eines wenig bekannten Stammes in den Kamerun war die erste Erfahrung des Autors in der Feldarbeit – und fast seine letzte. Nigel Barley baute sich in einer Schlammhütte nach Hause, um die Bräuche und Überzeugungen der Dowayo-Leute zu studieren. Er wusste, wie Feldarbeit durchgeführt werden sollte, aber wie er schnell entdeckte, berücksichtigte die Theorie nicht die schwer fassbare Natur der Dowayo-Gesellschaft, die sich weigerte, sich an die Regeln zu halten. In diesem ehrlichen, lustigen und zwanghaften Bericht seines ersten Jahres in Afrika Dr. Gerste – die Langeweile, Katastrophe, Krankheit und Feindseligkeit überlebt hat – gibt einen wunderbar respektlosen Einstieg in das Leben eines Sozialanthropologen, der dennoch inspirierende Lektüre macht.
Über die Autorin bzw. den Autor: Nigel Barley studierte moderne Sprachen und Ethnologie in Cambridge und Oxford und betrieb zwei Jahre lang Feldforschung in Kamerun. Seit 1981 arbeitet er am British Museum in London. Weitere Buchveröffentlichungen: "Die Raupenplage", "Traurige Insulaner" und "Hallo Mister Puttyman".
