Di cosa saremo fatti noi e di cosa sarà fatto il mondo? Le scienze e le tecnologie stanno ampliando i campi del design, modificando i materiali ma anche il nostro corpo. Per identificare l’effettiva evoluzione del rapporto tra scienze, conoscenza e design, il MADEC (Centro di ricerca sulla cultura del design dei materiali) del Politecnico di Milano, ha avviato nel 2014 un ampio dibattito sul tema. Questo, intitolato “Idee e materia”, ha aperto la strada a nuove opzioni per l’azione progettuale. Questo libro raccoglie i risultati di tale dibattito ed una serie di contributi critici da parte di esperti di discipline esterne al design, quali medicina, biotecnologia, ingegneria, arte ed antropologia.

Giulio Ceppi is an architect, designer and PhD. From 1990 to 1997, he was the co-ordinator of the Domus Academy Research Center, and from 2004 to 2007 the first Director of the DA Master's in Business Design. Since 1995 he has been a researcher at Politecnico di Milano and Professor of Industrial Design in the Design School. His activities are focused on sensorial design, new materials and technologies, and design strategy. After gaining experience as senior design consultant at Philips Design (1998-2001), in 1999 he funded Total Tool, a design network (Milan, Buenos Aires and Tokyo) consulting and designing new business ideas and exhibitions. He is author of a number of books about innovation practice: Children, Space, Relationship (1997), Oggetti Esistibili (2005), Design Epigenetic (2009), Design Storytelling (2011) and Awareness Design (2012). Marinella Ferrara, is an architect, PhD, Associate Professor of Industrial Design at Politecnico di Milano, and the co-ordinator of MADEC (www. madec.polimi.it). Her research and teaching interests focus on the relationship between design and scientific/technological innovation, with a particular focus on emerging materials. In recent years she has been engaged in the EU project Design for Enterprises, and on the Executive Board of ADI, co-ordinating the scientific committee for long-term professional development of designers. As an expert in the communication of the design contents, since 2011 she has been the editor-in- chief of the scientific journal PAD. Pages on Arts & Design and guest editor of AIS/Design: Storia e Ricerche. She is the author of over 100 publications including books, essays and articles in international journals.
