Classic nursery rhymes are paired with an illustrated array of real historical houses, gardens, and farms, bringing to life such enchanting verses as "Little Bo Peep" and "Sing a Song of Sixpence" and featuring fourteen hidden acorns among the drawings.

PreSchool-K?Into the rich world of existing Mother Goose collections (more than 80 are now in print) comes Penney's dazzling entry. The artist sets each of the 14 familiar rhymes in a specific National Trust property (one only wishes he had listed the actual properties shown). The words appear on the verso of each spread, surrounded by an appropriate border (a winding path encircles "There was a Crooked Man"), and the illustration appears on the recto. There's an ongoing hidden acorn motif but, otherwise, this is a straightforward celebration of the glorious wordplay in one of the earliest collection of children's rhymes. The colors in Penney's paintings, like those of Nicola Bayley's, glow on the pages. Anyone wanting to introduce 20th-century children to part of their literary heritage need look no further.?Kathleen Whalin, Greenwich Country Day School, CT
