Buchbeschreibung Oxford & New York : Oxford University Press, 2011. Hardcover. Dustjacket. 336 pp.- Today, Western intervention is a ubiquitous feature of violent conflict in Africa. Humanitarian aid agencies, community peacebuilders, microcredit promoters, children's rights activists, the World Bank, the International Criminal Court, the US military, and numerous others have involved themselves in African conflicts, all claiming to bring peace and human rights to situations where they are desperately needed. However, according to Adam Branch, Western intervention is not the solution to violence in Africa. Instead, it can be a major part of the problem, often undermining human rights and even prolonging war and intensifying anti-civilian violence. Based on an extended case study of Western intervention into northern Uganda's twenty-year civil war, and drawing on his own extensive research and human rights activism there, this book lays bare the reductive understandings motivating Western intervention in Africa, the inadequate tools it insists on employing, its refusal to be accountable to African citizenries, and, most important, its counterproductive consequences for peace, human rights, and justice. In short, Branch demonstrates how Western interventions undermine the efforts Africans themselves are undertaking to end violence in their communities. The book does not end with critique, however. Motivated by a commitment to global justice, it proposes concrete changes for Western humanitarian, peacebuilding, and justice interventions. It also offers a new normative framework for re-orienting the Western approach to violent conflict in Africa around a practice of genuine solidarity. English text. Condition : as new. Buchbeschreibung SPS Sep 2017, 2017. Taschenbuch. Buchzustand: Neu. Neuware - Since the onset of the declared Global War on Terror, as a result of the September 11th attacks on the World Trade Centre and the pentagon most of the countries in the world have heeded to the universal call by the United States to work in unity to ensure the War on terror is won. However important to note is that in the pursuit of winning this war most of the countries allied to the United States in ensuring terror is rooted out, have found themselves compromising human Rights in order to ensure terrorism is rooted out. This therefore necessitates the important conversation on whether it is true that a country cannot win the war on terror while at the same time upholding and safeguarding human rights. This research project therefore, provides helpful insight on how the war on terror can be won without compromising on human rights while at the same time highlighting the cases in which human rights were compromised in the pursuit of winning the war on terror with the specific case study being KENYA. 52 pp. Englisch. Buchbeschreibung Taylor & Francis Jan 2014, 2014. Taschenbuch. Buchzustand: Neu. Neuware - War, Conflict and Human Rights is an innovative, interdisciplinary textbook combining aspects of law, politics, and conflict analysis to examine the relationship between human rights and armed conflict. This second edition has been revised and updated, making use of both theoretical and practical approaches. Over the course of the book, the authors: \* examine the tensions and complementarities between protection of human rights and resolution of conflict, including the competing political demands and the challenges posed by internal armed conflict; \* analyse the different obligations and legal regimes applicable to state and non-state actors, including non-state armed groups, corporations and private military and security companies; \* explore the scope and effects of human rights violations in contemporary armed conflicts, such as those in Sierra Leone, Sudan, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and the former Yugoslavia, and implications for the 'Arab Spring'; \* assess the legal and institutional accountability mechanisms developed in the wake of armed conflict to punish violations of human rights law, and international humanitarian law such as the ad hoc tribunals for the former Yugoslavia and Rwanda, and the International Criminal Court; \* discuss continuing and emergent global trends and challenges in the fields of human rights and conflict analysis. This volume will be essential reading for students of war and conflict studies, human rights, and international humanitarian law, and highly recommended for students of conflict resolution, peacebuilding, international security and international relations, generally. Buchbeschreibung The Hague :. Kluwer Law International, 1998. Hardcover. 336 pp.- The war in Bosnia and Herzegovina was characterized by human rights abuses on a scale not seen in Europe since World War II. It is not then surprising that the Dayton Agreement, together with related texts and agreements, lays out what is probably the most ambitious human rights protection regime ever included within an international peace settlement. The peace agreement imports myriad substantive guarantees for the protection of every category of human rights, including some through a novel application of the European Convention on Human Rights. The provisions are accompanied by a highly complex system for both monitoring and enforcement of their implementation. These enforcement procedures contain temporary elements, such as international field operations, and an array of tribunals and institutions intended to be permanent. The present volume is a contribution to the process of interpreting and assessing the post-Dayton human rights regime in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The analysis of the contributing human rights scholars and practitioners is located within the contexts of the immediate reality and needs of Bosnia and Herzegovina and the systemic significance of the peace agreement for other post-conflict and complex emergency situations worldwide. Buchbeschreibung Springer-Verlag Gmbh Aug 2011, 2011. Taschenbuch. Buchzustand: Neu. Neuware - Marianne Wade and Almir Maljevi Although the worries about terrorism paled in comparison to the economic crisis as a topic during the last US election, one can find plenty of grounds to assume that they remain issue number one in the minds of politicians in Europe. As the German houses of Parliament prepare to call in the mediation committee in the discussion of legislation which would provide the Federal Police - thus far mandated purely with the post-facto investigation of crime - with powers to act to prevent acts of terrorism, Spain's struggle with ETA and the British Government licks its wounds after a resounding defeat of its latest anti-terrorist proposals by the House of Lords, one cannot but wonder whether post 9/11, the Europeans are not even more concerned with terrorism than their US counterparts. A look at media reports, legislative and judicial activities in either Britain or Germany clearly underlines that those two countries are deeply embroiled in anti-terrorist activity. Can it be that Europe is embroiled in the 'War on Terror'; constantly providing for new arms in this conflict Or is it a refusal to participate in the 'War on Terror' that fuels a constant need for Parliaments to grapple with the subject; begrudgingly conceding one increasingly draconian measure after the other The question as to where Europe stands in the 'War on Terror' is a fascinating one, but one, which is difficult to answer. 554 pp. Englisch.
