An excellently preserved large family Holy Bible, with illustrations and complete with the original functioning metal clasps. This enormous Holy Bible was once the property of the Perkins family, with their marriages, births and deaths recorded in the leaves bound to the front of the work, from the 1860s until the 1910s.This edition with a practical and explanatory commentary on the Old Testament by the Rev. Robert Jamieson, a minister of the Church of Scotland.Bound in a lavish contemporary leather binding, with metal edges and two functioning metal clasps.Undated; dated from copies held on Jisc.With thirty-eight illustrative engravings on steel throughout.A remarkable leather-bound Holy Bible complete with working clasps from the mid-nineteenth century. In a contemporary full crushed morocco binding. Externally generally smart, with some wear to the joints and rubbing to the raised bands. Extremities are protected by polished metal. Clasps are fully functioning and secure. Internally, binding is generally firm; front hinge is starting after the marriages leaf. Pages are occasionally a little spotted. Very Good. ( Ohne Erscheinungsjahr - um 1880 erschienen, der Widmungsvermerk auf dem Vorsatz datiert von 1883 ) Mit ca. 1618 Seiten und 34 Stahlstichtafeln ( hierunter 1 farbige ) sowie gestochenem Eingangstitelblatt. ( offfenbar fehlen einige wenige Stahlstichtafeln ). In einem reich goldgeprägtem Ganzlederband der Zeit mit umlaufendem Goldschnitt und Goldfileten, Folio ( 37,5 x 28 cm ). Der Einband ist etwas fleckig, berieben, Ecken und Kanten bestoßen, der schmale Einbandrücken angeplatzt, Bindung stark gelockert. Der Buchblock innen ist fast lose. Innen auf Vorsatzblatt alter Widmungsvermerk *George Lee, The gift of his Affectionate Father and Mother on his Birthday 1883*. Erste Seiten lose und mit Randläsionen, im Text eine Seite lose und mit Randläsionen. Seiten teils gering stockfleckig, desgleichen die Tafeln, einige Seiten oder Tafeln etwas angeknickt bzw. eselsohrig. (Apparently a few steel engraving plates are missing). In a richly gold-stamped contemporary full-leather binding with gilt edges and gold fillet all around, folio (37.5 x 28 cm). The cover is somewhat stained and rubbed, corners and edges bumped, the narrow spine is split, and the binding is very loose. The inside of the book block is almost loose. Inside the flyleaf there is an old dedication *George Lee, The gift of his Affectionate Father and Mother on his Birthday 1883*. First pages loose and with marginal damage, one page in the text is loose and with marginal damage. Pages slightly foxed, as are the plates; some pages or plates are slightly bent or dog-eared. Contemporary full black calf, sides ruled with intricate gilt foliate borders and decorated with central gilt foliate design, spine with raised bands and gilt-decorated compartments, yellow-coated endpapers, all edges gilt. 4 pages of partial used family register, 41 steel engraved plates after John Martin et al., including 2 engraved titles, 2 frontispieces, and 2 hand-coloured maps. Occasional offsetting and light spotting, some inevitable light shelfwear, generally a most handsome and impressive Victorian Bible.
