Although Hofmannsthal never completed his only novel Andreas, its theme—the quest for self through memory—haunted the Viennese writer and recurs again and again in his poems, libretti, and essays. Analyzing the fragment, David Miles discusses Hofmannsthal's understanding of memory and myth, Andreas' pivotal role in his work, and its place within the tradition of such novels as Goethe's Wilhelm Meister and Rilke's Malte.

CHAPTER 1
The Neoplatonic Looking-Glass: The Past as Escape
He would need then, to grow accustomed to the sight of that upper world. At first it would be easiest to make out shadows, and then images of men and things reflected in water, and later the things themselves. ... Last of all, he would be able to look at the Sun and contemplate its nature, not as it appears when reflected in water ... but as it is ... in its own domain.
Plato, The Parable of the Cave
Nowadays," Hofmannsthal wrote in 1893, "two things appear to be modern: the analysis of life and the flight from life. ... Reflection or fantasy, mirror-image or dream-image. Young nerves and old furniture have become modern" (PI, 149). As the nineteen-year-old Hofmannsthal was quick to assess, the prevailing intellectual attitudes in Europe at the turn of the century were indeed sharply divided. Like the hero of a Schnitzler drama, Europe, and particularly Hofmannsthal's Vienna, was caught between the naturalistic urge to analyze itself and the impressionistic impulse to lose itself in the dream-like flux of the present: positivism and symbolism, naturalism and neo-romanticism, Freud and Mallarme were the ruling fashions of the day. As Hofmannsthal puts it in the same essay, two basic drives overshadowed the current morality: "the drive to understand and that to forget" (PI, 150).
Hofmannsthal's analysis of the intellectual climate, however, applies even more to the poet himself, for he conceived of his own art, of the poetic image in particular, as arising at precisely that point where the world without — the world of the mirror — impinged upon the world within — that of the dream. Existing on the borderline between sight and insight, the real and the symbolic, the immanent and the transcendent, Hofmannsthal's Image informs his entire aesthetic, particularly during the years of his so-called lyric decade, from 1890 to 1900. The key to this conjunction of two worlds in one image lies above all in the phenomenon of memory. Again and again Hofmannsthal likens memory to a world that is of reality and yet also somehow beyond it, much like the reality of dreams. Thus he likens the memory of a trip he had taken to Provence with his tutor following graduation from Gymnasium
