History of Upper Assam, Upper Burmah and North-Eastern Frontier by L. W. Shakespear is an important early historical account of a region that, in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, was undergoing rapid political and administrative transformation. Drawing on his experience as a British colonial administrator, Shakespear offers a detailed survey of the geography, peoples, and political developments of Upper Assam and the adjoining territories, including Upper Burma and the sensitive north-eastern frontier zones. The book traces local histories, dynastic changes, tribal relations, and the expansion of British influence, presenting both ethnographic observations and descriptions of administrative challenges. Although framed through the colonial perspective of its time, the work remains a valuable reference for understanding the region's strategic importance, cultural diversity, and the early interactions between local societies and the British Empire. Its careful documentation makes it a useful resource for historians studying Northeast India and Burma's frontier history.
