The present work describes from the Asian point of view the transition of South-east Asia from the medieval ages to the modern era. It traces he history of the region from the advent of European powers in the 16th century to their exit by the 1960s. This process, which continued for four centuries, witnessed the economic exploitation of several kingdoms, leading to the destruction of their native political systems. The British, the Dutch, the French and the Spaniards introduced their own cultural and administrative patterns dividing the region into watertight compartments. The rise of independent nations added a new dimension, in polity and culture, to the extraneous elements that had been adopted during the alien rule. In their quest for peace and security, these countries have had to wage war against internal disruptive forces and solve the problems of poverty, disease, and a fast growing population.
