"The publication of the Hipparcos Catalogues in June 1997 (ESA 1997) constituted an important milestone in the understanding of cosmic distances, by providing a set of astrometric and photometric data of unprecedented precision. Simultaneously, other large efforts - and specificially the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) key projects - are bringing new insight into this controversial subject, making it timely to discuss the convergence of existing determinations. The colloquium aimed at bringing together experts working on complementary aspects of our understanding of the distance scale of the Universe and at investigating whether some harmonization could be achieved between sometimes differing criteria and results.
