Ever since Grandpa Max read The Three Musketeers to Bobby, Fritzy and Keith, they could think of nothing else. It was the early 1960s and there wasnt much else for three eleven year olds to do in the small town where they lived. Playing musketeers took up most of their days. Bobby and his friends would put on homemade costumes. With wooden swords in hand, they would act out the novel, Bobby pretending to be, Athos, Fritzy, Porthos and Keith, Aramis. But since there were only three, they had no DArtagnan. How the boys longed for a DArtagnan to complete their games. Then one day, the boys noticed that Grandpa Max, who lived in the apartment over Bobbys familys garage, began to mysteriously disappear and reappear. Little did they know that the books Grandpa Max read to them were magic.Given to him by a mysterious old woman at a book sale, Bobbys grandfather quickly discovered he could transport himself into the stories. Once Grandpa Max realized that he had interfered with the story of The Three Musketeers enough to change the book by unwittingly causing Athos, Porthos and Aramis to be captured by Cardinal Richelieus guards, keeping them from helping DArtagnan get to England to recover two jewels that were given to the Duke of Buckingham as a token of the Queens friendship, he summoned Bobby and his friends to join him and help repair the damage. Once inside the book, the boys met the real DArtagnan and, with his help, and the assistance of a young French girl named Jeanne, Grandpa Max and the boys set out on their journey to warn the Duke of Buckingham that Cardinal Richelieu had persuaded the King to insist that his Queen wear the jewels to a gala event. If they failed, every copy of The Three Musketeers would change forever.Robert Bresloffs book, The Wee Musketeers is the exciting first installment of the Get Into the Classics series. The stories are a fun way to promote interest in reading the classics and are a great choice for the reluctant reader.
