EDITED & ART WORK BY THE EMINENT KUBOTA BEISEN . * This is one of China's Four Great Classical Novels. It was written sometime in the middle of the 18th century during the Qing dynasty. Long considered a masterpiece of Chinese literature, the novel is generally acknowledged to be the pinnacle of Chinese fiction. . Red Chamber is believed to be semi-autobiographical, mirroring the rise and decline of author Cao Xueqin's own family and, by extension, of the Qing dynasty. As the author details in the first chapter, it is intended to be a memorial to the damsels he knew in his youth: friends, relatives and servants. The novel is remarkable not only for its huge cast of characters and psychological scope, but also for its precise and detailed observation of the life and social structures typical of 18th-century Chinese society. . *** THE EDITOR, ARTIST & COMPILER: KUBOTA BEISEN [1852-1906]: . Beisen was the compiler of this work, he was also the artist. He worked in concert with OHTSUKA Yuji, who carved the illustrations in woodblocks. . This example has a large number of full-page illustrations, all red cinnabar sealed/chopped by the artist, with his signature in the block. Printed and bound in the typical Chinese manner on double-folded stitched leaves. . Although his style remained recognizably Japanese, his knowledge of Western principles and methods is also reflected in his work. Beisen trained under Suzuki Hyakunen (1825-1891). The way in which he integrated Western perspective and techniques in his work was a self-taught skill. . Kubota was a teacher at the Kyoto Prefecture School of Painting, which was founded in 1878 by Kubota and others. Among his colleagues in establishing the school was the artist Kono Bairei. . He was the artist/illustrator of many fine & fascinating color woodblock printed books of his epoch. . *** THIS RARE EDITION WAS ISSUED STRICTLY TO MEMBERS ONLY OF THE PRIVATE SOCIETY: FUZOKU EMAKI TOSHO KANKO-KAI SHIKI: .
