At the Hartwell Institute, high in the frozen Adirondacks, the wealthy pay to be cured of themselves — and sign away the right to ever walk out the door.

Joan Wasko keeps the records. Four months in, broke and quietly drowning under her mother's care bills, she asks no questions. Then a client is found dead on a cure porch at first light — the body already gone down the mountain, the floor mopped, the alarm dead, the paperwork laid open and waiting for her signature.

She only signs the file. That's the whole job. But the times don't line up, the ink is too fresh, and Joan knows the hand that altered the record.

A storm is coming. The one road down is about to close. And the softest men in the building are the ones deciding who leaves.

Some doors are held shut for your own good.
