This volume presents reviews of the pathogenesis and clinical aspects of the AIDS dementia complex (ADC), a neurological disorder directly caused by HIV-1. The opening section examines the principal forces involved in the viral pathogenesis of ADC, ie HIV-1 neurotropism, immune system interactions with viruses, and cytokine circuits in the brain. An extensive section on the neuropathology and pathogenesis of ADC includes studies on the role of macrophages and microglia, the cellular neuropathology of HIV encephalitis, and the role of cytokines and amino acids excitotoxicity in mediating neuronal injury. The concluding section focuses on clinical features, evaluation and management of HIV-related psychiatric disorders, ADC and pediatric HIV encephalopathy.
