Fragments of daily life, traces of religious rituals, economic activities, signs of relationships between people and interactions with the environment: objects from the past are the archaeologist's raw material. Thanks to them, they can bring back to life societies that are sometimes extraordinarily distant from us, which written records alone do not always allow us to understand. Taking advantage of them requires long and meticulous excavations, experience, astuteness, and the use of numerous auxiliary sciences and disciplines. In this book, Italian archaeologist Marcella Frangipane takes us with her to the excavation sites to understand how archaeology makes it possible to reconstruct the history of the development of civilizations in the ancient Near East, from the birth of agriculture and the family to the emergence of borders, including the advent of labor specialization. In addition to the Levant and Egypt, the book provides a wealth of information on the ancient civilizations of Anatolia, which are rarely discussed in French-language works, and yet where the birth of the State and a complex bureaucracy took place even before the birth of writing.

Marcella Frangipane est membre de l'Accademia dei Lincei, de la National Academy of Sciences des Etats-Unis et du Deutsches Archäologisches Institut de Berlin. Elle enseigne la préhistoire du Proche et Moyen-Orient à l'université La Sapienza à Rome. Pendant trente ans, elle a dirigé les fouilles du site d'Arslantepe en Turquie, classé sur la liste du patrimoine mondial de l'Unesco.
