AI data centers are rapidly emerging in rural areas across the globe as the demand for artificial intelligence technologies continues to expand. These large-scale facilities play a critical role in storing data and training machine learning models, but the resources required to operate them, most notably water, have raised growing environmental concerns. In many cases, large amounts of water are drawn from local rivers and public water supplies to cool complex data servers, placing increasing strain on the communities in which these centers are located. As the environmental footprint of AI infrastructure becomes more visible, concerns surrounding sustainability and resource consumption are becoming central topics in governmental discussions. Despite the growing attention surrounding AI data centers, there remains a lack of comprehensive academic research critically examining their environmental impact on rural communities across the globe. The Growth of AI Data Centers and the Impact on Global Water Resources examines the rapid expansion of artificial intelligence infrastructure and its growing demand on freshwater reserves. This book presents insights into how technology growth intersects sustainability challenges by highlighting real-world implications, regional case studies, and global perspectives on resource management. Covering topics such as freshwater consumption, predictive analytics for water management, and air cooling, this book is an indispensable academic resource for graduate and doctoral students, environmental scientists, climate researchers, data center managers, urban and rural development planners, policymakers, and more.
