Diese Dialoge zwischen Robert Aitken Roshi, einem der ersten in Amerika geborenen Zen-Meister, und Bruder David Steindl-Rast, dem römisch-katholischen Mönch und Einsiedler, fanden während eines einwöchigen Rückzugs statt, den die beiden alten Freunde 5,057.1 cm einem abgelegenen Teil der Insel Hawaii unternahmen. Ihr Ziel war es, den Dialog zwischen Buddhismus und Christentum auf eine frische Art und Weise zu nähern, der einen Vergleich der persönlichen Erfahrungen der Dialoge – als Buddhist bzw. als Christ – anstatt abstrakten Konzepten als Ausgangspunkt nimmt. Das Ergebnis ist die Entdeckung einer überraschenden Menge an Gemeinsamkeiten – die Art von gemeinsamer Erfahrung, die eine solide Grundlage für den weiteren Dialog bildet.
